While Unitree markets the As2-W as a civilian platform for inspection, security, logistics, and scientific research, its capabilities make it equally well-suited for military missions, including reconnaissance, battlefield resupply, perimeter patrol, and operations in terrain inaccessible to conventional wheeled vehicles. Japanese robotics engineers tears down Unitree robot. Confirms… “We are years behind.” Nikkei xTECH recently published a teardown of Unitree Robotics' G1 humanoid robot, leading Japanese engineers to concede that Japan cannot close the robotics gap with China in the short term. The analysis confirmed that Chinese robotics have moved far beyond the "display" phase into highly integrated, mass-producible commercial hardware. The teardown revealed a brutal cost advantage. The Unitree G1 retails for $13,500 (approx. RMB 85,000), yet its Bill of Materials (BOM) cost is estimated at just RMB 41,600. This yields a gross profit margin of 40.7% for the base model, scaling up to 66.7% for the EDU version. Unitree achieves this by leveraging mature domestic supply chains—including components from DJI and Rockchip—and replacing expensive harmonic drives with self-developed integrated actuator modules costing roughly $140 each. Unitree shipped over 5,500 humanoid units in 2025, ranking first globally in its category. Japanese analysts note that China’s supply chain maturity allows for rapid component validation and pilot runs that Western and Japanese incumbents currently cannot match.

Unitree @UnitreeRobotics has officially start the UniBot World Challenge! A remote real-robot evaluation cloud only Unitree can run. You don't download a test set, you submit a live policy server (implement `get_action`, expose N consecutive ports from 8765, one per test robot) and Unitree executes it on its own physical G1 fleet ("multi-robot evaluation clusters"). Not a simulation. The benchmark is engineered to punish memorization. Expect distractors, unseen objects, human interference, and so on. Exactly what the current benchmarks like LIBERO lack. Unitree advertises 32 tasks, 32,000 demos, 169 h (nominally ~1,000 demos and ~5.3 h per task). But the public HuggingFace datasets are small and wildly uneven: HangCup contains 44 episodes, ArrangePlates 115, ArrangeTestTubes 108, ConveyorSorting 159, up to OrganizeStationery 341. Should we expect a full release at some point? Or are we expected to work with data augmentation? I find it interesting that it mirrors AgiBot's own 2026 challenge. Chinese robot makers are each standing up a real-robot manipulation benchmark on their own fleets, probably as a way to own the benchmark. Throughout the process, the Japanese technicians and reporters marveled at the high level of technology embodied in the Chinese humanoid robot. They ultimately concluded that Chinese robotics development has clearly moved beyond the stage of mere demonstrations; regarding humanoid robotics, it is "likely unrealistic" for Japan to narrow the gap with China in the near term. Japan was once a global pioneer in the robotics industry, holding a dominant position—particularly in industrial robotics. Today, however, China has achieved a world-leading status in the field of humanoid robotics, driven by mature, refined manufacturing processes and technological innovation.
